Stedham win Rest of the League tournament

Tuesday 23 August 2016, 11.06am

What a difference a week can make.  A week before at the Seaford Tournament it was cold with high winds and a hint of rain from time to time. On Sunday 14 August 2016 at Plumpton everybody enjoyed non-stop, very warm sunshine. The Rest of the League of League tournament is an opportunity for those teams in the five Sussex divisions who did not qualify in the top four places of their respective league to show their skills in tournament play.

The nine teams competing were split into two groups, one of four teams with five overs per innings and the other of five teams with four overs per innings.  Play got under way with Stedham rattling up a rousing 97 in their four overs against Burwash, but not to be outdone Bolney went 12 better in reaching an impressive 109 in their 5 overs against Ashdown.  As the day progressed, it became clear that there was not much to choose between Bolney, Ditchling and Yapton in Group 2 whilst in Group 1 Stedham and Burwash led the way.

Eventually Stedham and Yapton, both from West Division, emerged as group winners to contest an intriguing final.  Batting first Yapton posted a challenging score of 73 from their 4 overs but with the Stedham opening batsmen running well between the wickets and taking every opportunity to punish any loose bowling, they achieved their objective by the middle of the fourth over.

The runners-up final went to Bolney over Burwash on the toss of a coin.

Individual awards were won by Clair Harrison, Stedham with 187 runs; most catches went to Annabel in the Bolney team with 3 and most wickets went to Lee Finlayson with 5.
