Oathall wins at Sussex School Games 2015

Saturday 11 July 2015, 1.06pm

Overcast skies, strong winds, occasional sunshine and one or two outbursts of rain made for a very testing day for both officials and players as teams of Year 9/10 students from Brighton, Bognor, Crawley, Hastings, Ringmer, Uckfield, Billingshurst, Angmering and Haywards Heath played on four pitches in the Sainsbury’s Sussex School Games at the Thomas Bennett playing field in Crawley on Wednesday 8 July 2015.

Playing in two groups, with matches of 4 overs in the larger group of 5 teams and 6 overs in the group with 4 teams, competition was very close between all the teams.

In Group 1, Angmering, Oathall (Haywards Heath) and The Weald (Billingshurst) all produced three wins in their opening four matches with Oathall and Angmering edging out The Weald for places in the semi-finals having scored more runs in their four qualifying matches. In Group 2, Ringmer with three straight wins and Uckfield with two wins also progressed to the semi-finals. With Oathall beating Uckfield and Angmering losing to Ringmer, the stage was set for a very testing final game.

In this game, Ringmer dismissed the entire Oathall side by the sixth ball of the final over for 44 runs. With 26 runs on the board and 2 overs remaining, it looked a certain victory for Ringmer but excellent fielding, the loss of three more wickets and some very controlled bowling by Oathall, deservedly brought them the title of 2015 Sussex Stoolball Champions for Years 9/10.
