Downlands win Year 7/8 Sussex Schools’ Tournament

Monday 7 July 2014, 8.13pm

On Wednesday 2 July the warmest day of the year at 26°C welcomed 10 schools from across Sussex for the sixth annual girls’ stoolball tournament for Years 7/8 at Plumpton Cricket Club. Playing in two groups on four pitches produced a non-stop programme of lively and exhilarating stoolball. With only 8 balls being bowled in each over – wides and no balls yielded 3 runs – and bowling from one end only meant that accurate bowling and sharp fielding was needed to protect the runs scored.

Two schools Downlands and Ringmer went through the day undefeated to reach the final game of the day. Batting first Downlands took 65 runs off the enthusiastic bowling of Ringmer. Downlands were very well served by their hard-hitting opening bats who had helped them score no less than 301 runs from 16 overs in their four qualifying matches. Undaunted, a very competitive and talented Ringmer squad ran their hearts out to fall just short of the target by 7 runs. In the third/fourth play-off Oathall (43) beat Bishop Luffa (26).

Stoolball England were indebted to Kelvin Speirs, Jane and Louisa Knight and Debbie Martin for their help in umpiring and scoring.
