England win Under-21s and Over-50s matches

Sunday 22 September 2013, 9.30pm

It was a successful day for both England teams at Horsham Cricket Ground. The Under-21s scored 150 before bowling out the President’s XI for 81, and later the Over-50s scored 209 which proved too much for the President’s XI to match in their 20 overs. Read on for the match highlights and scorecards, or you can see more photos from the day’s play on our Facebook page. (You don’t need to be a Facebook member.)

England Under-21 Girls v President’s Under-21 Girls XI

In the first ever match at Under 21 level, the England team posted a respectable score of 150 against the President’s XI at Horsham Cricket Club on Sunday 22 September.  Under heavy skies, Jenny Grout (Surrey) and Hayleigh Gorringe (Sussex) gave the England team a steady start as they put on 45 for the first wicket.  With wickets falling steadily thereafter, it was the middle order England batsmen led by skipper Zoe Parsons (32), Lily Bravo (18) and Donna Cottingham (15) who saw them through to their final total of 150.  Jodie Rushin (3-26), Rebecca French (3-36) and Georgina Harrison (2-21) were the pick of the President’s bowlers.

In response, the bowling by England’s Kim Brown (4-15) and Jenny Grout (3-14) proved too much for the President’s XI.  Backed up by some excellent fielding with one running catch by Jamine Rushin being quite brilliant, the President’s team were all out for 81 with only skipper Jess Dean from Horsham (18) offering any real resistance.

England Over-50 Ladies v President’s Over-50 Ladies XI

The promised sun never arrived on Sunday afternoon at Horsham Cricket Club but the fireworks display scheduled for Saturday 26 October arrived early as England skipper Gill Hemsley (Newick) and Angela Marshall (Horsham) put on a sparkling opening partnership of 137 from just 13 overs.  Hemsley, with two 6s and nine 4s in only 60 balls, hit a crackerjack 80 whilst Marshall carried her bat for 69 including four 4s.

The target of 210 set by the England side from 20 overs was a big call for the President’s XI but opener Caroline Gorman (Loxwood) put in a strong bid to swing the game their way with a hard hit 70 including eight 4s.  Tight fielding in support of the England bowling with Laurie Gordon (3-32) and Karen Speirs (2-26) proved too much for the President’s team as they fell 60 runs short of the England target with three wickets standing.
