Expo Cup raises over £300 for charity

Saturday 27 August 2011, 9.12am

The Expo Cup was played in warm and humid conditions at the Little Common ground on the outskirts of Bexhill on Sunday 21 August 2011. The Expo Cup is a charity event and this year it raised £303 which will go to a local charity.

Playing on two pitches the five teams, representing Surrey and four of the Sussex Divisions, enjoyed some very good and close encounters with the game between Surrey and Mid Division actually finishing in a tie. With innings of just 8 overs, it was clear that sides with good fielders and accurate bowlers that could keep the scoring rate down would do well.

In their opening match against the hosts, East Division, the West Division team captained by Connie Chapman and made up with players from Angmering, Horsham, Ashington, Yapton and Winterfold produced a total of 89 runs. This score didn’t appear too imposing for an East Division side full of seasoned county players and containing particularly attacking batsmen. However, the early dismissal of skipper and leading run scorer on the day, Toni Wheatley, gave the West the early advantage which was further pushed home by Amanda Curry and Sue Targett with some fast and accurate bowling, supported by excellent catching and fielding so that East’s final score of 66 fell well short of a winning total.

This first round win gave West Division the confidence to win their three remaining games against Surrey, Mid Division and Central Division and take home the Expo Cup at the end of a very good day of competitive stoolball. The runners-up were East Division with three wins out of four and there was a much improved display by Mid Division who won two games against Central Division and Surrey.

Individual awards on the day went to:

  • Toni Wheatley (East Division) – most runs
  • Amanda Curry (West Division) – most wickets
  • Natasha Beale (West Division) – most catches
