Angmering wins Sussex County Knockout Cup Final

Sunday 30 November 2008, 2.13pm

Having already won the Sussex County League Championship earlier this month and their own West Division League title, Angmering rounded off their season with another very competent performance when recording their sixth win overall, and their fifth in the last six years in the Sussex County Knockout Cup Final, which was played at Ford’s Green, Nutley on Sunday 28 September 2008.

They won the toss and batted first in the welcome autumn sunshine at Nutley on Sunday. In a half century opening partnership with Karen Harman (28), Angmering’s captain Melissa Mantle confidently set out to build a sound base for what was to prove a very commanding final score of 292 from their 30 overs.

After Karen’s departure, she was well supported by Gill Hilliard (47) and Connie Chapman (20) as Angmering were able to impose an impressive asking rate of nearly 10 an over on their Stone Cross opponents. Mantle survived an early scare in the first over, but after that moved relentlessly through her batting gears to record what proved to be a match winning 145 not out.

In reply Stone Cross had the worst possible start when opener Jane Jenner was run out in the first over following a vital piece of fielding by Hayley Shepperd and they were never given the chance to recover from this setback. Sandra Gorringe (26), Laurie Tonks (19), Jo Pennell (17) and a young Hayleigh Gorringe (14) all tried in turn to establish a foothold but they were up against some accurate bowling from Kelly Finneran (5-35), Linda Royce, Hayley Shepperd and Melissa Mantle and it was not to be their day.

The Stone Cross club has enjoyed an excellent season, winning the East Division title and getting to the final stages of the County Tournament at Seaford in August. The fact that they were confined to a final score of 112 was also due to some excellent Angmering fielding, where close fielder Gill Hilliard took 2 catches.
