Spring 2009 newsletter

Stoolball coaching DVD

The National Stoolball Association’s coaching DVD explains how to bowl spin, how to bat effectively, how to improve your fielding, and suggests practices for your class or team. It’s an excellent way to improve your stoolball.

‘Skills and drills in striking and fielding games through the context of stoolball’ is presented by Melissa Mantle, our Coaching Development Officer.

Stoolball coaching at Plumpton

Do you want to go on a stoolball coaching course? Do you know someone who might want to go? Melissa Mantle will be running a course at Plumpton Agricultural College, East Sussex on Sunday 29 April from 1pm-7pm.

The course costs £40 per person, which includes a stoolball coaching DVD. ‘Stoolball coach’ sweatshirts are also available for £15 (optional). It will take place on the sports field at the college, or may move into the sports hall if the weather is poor.

DVD – Let’s Play Stoolball

This DVD, with accompanying booklet, allows anyone new to stoolball see how to play. The film explains the rules and promotes the atmosphere and friendliness which runs through the game.

It shows a league game, a children’s game, a tournament with ladies-only and mixed teams, a school game, indoor stoolball in a sports hall and how to set up.

The accompanying booklet contains rules, helpful hints and useful addresses. The DVD runs for 40 minutes.

Coaching at University College, Chichester

The National Stoolball Association (NSA) level 1 coaching award took place at University College, Chichester on 1 March 2005 with over 80 participants.

The course is running at Hillview School, Tonbridge on 18 April 2005, and again on 25 April 2005.

Over 150 students have now passed their Level One course, and of these over 30 have achieved Level Two. Melissa Mantle, the NSA’s Chief Examiner, is hoping to put one or two students through Level Three – the highest award. As well as a ‘Let’s Play Stoolball’ video, those who pass can buy a navy blue coach’s sweatshirt.
