Of course this game, like so may others to come, suffered from the new rule change regarding the 'back of the bat'. The range of shots played was considerably reduced, and the game developed into a turgid battle between the traditional, boring, 'front of the bat' hitters. I for one find it very sad that the stoolball fields of Sussex will no longer be graced by the deft back flick that did so much to provide a rich variety to our beautiful game.

Looney DC (AKA Lewes District Council) fielded a strong team, scoring 124 from 12 overs. Top hitters were Joe P (35), Joe A (19) with Faisal and Sarah both on 12 each. However, the story could have been quite different, if it had not been for a very slippery pitch and ball, leading to a few quite spectacular dropped catches and slip ups in the field. Despite the conditions, Phil secured 3 excellent catches and wickets fell reasonably steadily, with good overs from Bill (2 for 3), Adam and Jack (1 for 4) and Rick (0 for 4).

The Lewes Arms' innings started very slowly and they quickly fell below the run rate needed to meet the Looney's target. Despite excellent fielding by the Looneys, the day was saved for the Arms by a spirited partnership between Jack and Rick, taking the total from 38 after 5 overs to 127 in just under 6 overs. They retired on 34 and 33 respectively.

The final score was Lewes Arms 148, Looney DC 124. 12 overs were played.
